Mise-en-place for business

I recently came across a book that I believe can truly connect us all: 'Work Clean: The Life-Changing Power of Mise en Place' by Dan Charnas. This book introduces the universal concept of mise-en-place, a French term meaning 'putting in place.' It emphasizes three core values: preparation, process, and presence. The preparation aspect involves organizing and preparing ingredients for the upcoming meal service. The process encompasses chefs organizing and maintaining their workspace, tools, and equipment. Presence, on the other hand, involves utilizing a type of meditation that focuses on objects, sounds, or thoughts. These universal concepts can be applied to various aspects of our professional lives, making us feel connected and part of a larger community.

What's fascinating is that mise-en-place principles are not confined to the culinary world. They can be effectively applied to the business world, particularly in sales and job applications. This adaptability is a testament to the versatility of these principles. Just as chefs meticulously prepare their ingredients before cooking, job applicants should also meticulously prepare their application materials, such as tailored resumes and cover letters. This thoughtful preparation is essential for the job interview and application process, making you feel more flexible and versatile.

In both the culinary and business worlds, the end goal is crucial. Whether it's the final plated dish or the desired job and income outcome, it's essential to establish specific, measurable objectives and outline the steps needed to achieve them. By meticulously planning and preparing, one can increase their chances of success, a principle that holds in both the kitchen and the boardroom.

If you're interested in exploring these concepts further, here are a couple of recommended articles that discuss applying mise-en-place to the business world:

Mise-en-place should be applied to the business sales world as well. All resumes have the same essential elements. The job interview and application process requires a lot of preparation (a personalized resume and cover letter). Just as a chef meticulously prepares the ingredients before cooking, you, too, should prepare your application materials. Applying is the same as fine-tuning; how do you ensure the resume gets to the right person? What type of follow-up is needed? The presence is very much related to the interview. How have you prepared?

Chefs work backward. They start with the finished plate. What will it look and taste like? Similarly, think about your next job. What's the final step? Your yearly income? How do you get to the salary level that you want? What do your monthly sales need to be? What does your relationship with your clients/managers need to look like? How does this tie back to an interview? Resume? Application? Job hunt? Map it out. Remember, a goal is measurable with specifics. Otherwise, it's just a dream. Plan it out!
